Make Up Monday: DIOR MASCARA

DSC_0130

These three babies are a big part of my daily make up routine & look.

First, there is the Dior Maximizer lash plumping serum, which I use as a primer. This conditions my lashes, and acts as a great base. Everything goes on smoother after applying this white serum, and it really opens your eyes up.

Then I use the Overcurl. I don’t even need an eyelash curler with this mascara! This is the best 1-2 combination that I’ve found, and people ask me what mascara I use whenever I do this. (I also use Latisse, but that is a story for another post).

The DiorShow is another favorite. It has just the best wand, since it separates each lash.

DSC_0127

I do a straight application from the roots, no wiggling. Just three coats, plus two on the bottom. I wait about a minute between each coat and then go again.

These are great for special occasions, because of the wow factor, but I also use Dior mascara daily. I like the big wand, although the downsize is that they dry out quicker and have to be replaced more often.

DSC_0135

Dior Mascara all the way! Diorshow is a bestseller for good reason. If you want long, long, long lashes, this is for you.

What’s your favorite mascara? Is there one you swear by?

Let me know!!

Spiritual Friday: Me and My Folks

I’m with my parents this Thanksgiving.  It’s just me this year.  Since there are five of us, you never know what combination of the clan will land.  But this year I am flying solo with them.

One of the great blessings of my adulthood has been that I still have them.  I’ve gotten to know them in a way that is so different than how I knew them in my twenties and thirties.  They are all too human to me now… I see them much the way I see dear friends I love and admire –people of a time and place who have survived the joys and sorrows that life brings us…and who have done so with grace and dignity and humor.

My mother insisted on cooking the dinner again.  She is 81 now. I didn’t argue too much– stood at the ready and tackled the clean-up with all I could give it.  She told me it felt good to know she ‘could still cook Thanksgiving dinner.’ The verdict:  turkey was good – moist, not dry; stuffing was a bit dry for her liking.  “Easily fixed with gravy,” my dad and I responded!

In the morning I took my Dad– who will be 87 tomorrow– to the beach.  He sat on the boardwalk bench and I headed down for a long walk along the Atlantic.  I returned to him, my soul soothed, and we sat for a while and talked.

He speaks more now of his childhood.  I love his stories–like the one about the fire on the Morrow Castle, which beached in Spring Lake, New Jersey on its return trip to New York Harbor from Havana.  His folks drove down from Bayonne with the rest of the crowds to see the famous grand passenger ship now ruined and burned.  The story of the Morrow Castle goes on and includes explosions and prison and murder… look it up.  It’s a great tale.

My favorite moment was when he said, “I remember I had a little camera that took postage stamp size pictures.  I could see the entire hull…it was enormous.”  His gaze never left the ocean as he recalled that day.

“How old were you Dad?”

“I was six.”

I always get choked up when we talk about his memories.

Happy Birthday, Pop.

Tell me about your parents.  What are their stories?

Weekly Favorite: LA MER

This is what you should put at the top of your Christmas List.

In case you were wondering what item will really change your life, and would make the perfect $285 stocking stuffer, this is it.

Creme De La Mer.

DSC_0149

This is more than a weekly favorite! It is one of my all time favorite products that I have gone back for again and again. I love the smell, the feel, and how it works. I use it as a moisturizing base under make up, since it’s smoothing and helps my make up go on smoother.

This cream is worth the money because it works so well. It is so rich that I don’t even like to use it in the summertime! The ingredients are great- natural and strong. A little bit goes a LONG way with La Mer.

I definitely think anyone who can afford this should buy this moisturizer. I also use the eye cream. I also think you should just stop by the La Mer counter and talk to the women working there. I do this all the time! I don’t think you should feel nervous or afraid approaching these cosmetic counters, since the people working there know a lot about their product and want to help! Sample some Creme De La Mer and see how you feel.

I have a feeling you’ll love it.

What are your favorites this week? Do share!

Daily Life: My iPad Mini

DSC_0219

I have an iPad mini, and I absolutely LOVE IT!

Why I Bought It:

I needed something to take with me when I travel. I have a PC laptop, and the iPad mini is the perfect complement to that. This is SO perfect for traveling! I write, stay connected, and don’t miss anything with this device. I use the iPad in my car to send quick emails, and since it uses both cellular and wifi, it works everywhere. Honestly, I bought the mini because it fits in my purse!

Why I Recommend It:

I crank out tons of work on this baby, and it is so much better for my aging eyes! I don’t want to be squinting all day long, trying to reply on an iPhone, and you shouldn’t either! I can even text message other iPhone users from it.

Plus, I watch Netflix on here at night! The iPad mini is so cute, it’s aesthetically pleasing, and the interface is so easy to use. I highly recommend the Logitech Keyboard I bought with it for under $100- plus it doubles as a stand.

Check the stand and the mini out here.

As a woman who travels a lot, I love my iPad mini for business and entertainment. You don’t even need to take it out of your bag in the airport, unlike a laptop! I always have it with me, just in case.

What are your most essential business tools? I’m debating switching over to Google Drive, as well.

Have a good Thanksgiving week!

Make Up Monday: Bobbi Brown Favorites!

DSC_0112

Ah, Bobbi Brown.

I am a huge Bobbi Brown fan, as you have probably figured out if you’ve spent any time on This Day Right Now!

I wanted to share my top five favorite Bobbi Brown items with you.

1. Concealer with Powder

This is still the best product out there for dark circles. This famous correcting concealer can cover anything, and what else can you ask for from a concealer?! It doesn’t crease, and it is gentle on my skin.

2. Long Wear Cream Shadow

Oh, a cream shadow! Love this stuff. It is a great base for other shadows, or to wear by itself.

3. Pot Rouge for Lips & Cheeks

I love the texture of this product. It’s creamy and stays on for hours. It’s my perfect PURSE PRODUCT, since it perks me up and is amazing for the on-the-run life. It’s a little splash of color and a definite recommendation if you’re new to Bobbi Brown.

4. Shimmer Brick

Great summer or spring colors, really. This blush is very forgiving when applied with a brush, and is a nice pick me up. It’s easy to use and it always makes me happy to open this up, since it’s so beautiful.

DSC_0103

5. Face & Body Bronzing Duo

I use this every  day. The bronzer is light for a bronzer, and the blush is warm, so it’s great for all over your face.

I am a devotee to Bobbi Brown brushes, and lipsticks, but these five are my make up bag essentials.

What products are you most loyal to?

Please share!

Weekly Favorite: Moroccan Oil Hairspray

Moroccan Argan Oil… Coconut Oil… Macadamia Nut Oil… Everywhere you look, there’s another new oil to put on your skin or hair, and another article about why this oil is the best.

Well, sucker that I usually am for marketing, I have not been totally taken by the oil trend.

However, I LOVE the smell of my new Moroccan Oil Hairspray.

DSC_0155

This is a new staple in my routine.

Here’s why:

-It’s not drying, which is so important for my aging hair.

-It has a medium hold, which is good for me. Despite the fact that I was born in New Jersey, I don’t like the aqua net shellac look!

-It smells amazing, like I said, and the bottle is pretty.

-There is a travel size available, which is great for plane trips.

-It holds my hair’s body when I take the time to curl the ends with a flat iron

Do you use hairspray? What hairspray have you heard good things about? Let me know!

FITNESS: Post Workout Nutrition

DSC_0042

I go pretty hard in the gym. I have been working with a trainer for a few years, and strength training is very important to me. I believe that lifting weights is especially important for women, since it strengthens your bones and can help you reach new levels of fitness.

Still, as important as working out is, refueling the right way after working out is just as important.

After a workout, I put a scoop of protein into my shaker bottle. I use either vegan milk or water, depending on my taste preferences for the day. If I want to enjoy a shake and I’m not going to eat my next meal for a bit, I’ll use almond or coconut milk with my protein powder. If I just want to get my protein in without a big fuss, I’ll use water. Lately I’ve been using vegan protein.

I love my About Time protein, and already used up my vanilla flavor tub that I purchased this summer. Now I’m scraping the bottom of my chocolate flavor! There is also a birthday cake flavor, and a cinnamon roll one. This is a great brand that uses stevia instead of artificial sweeteners.

When on a recent allergen-free cleanse, where I cut out dairy, soy, corn, wheat, and processed sugar, I discovered Hammer Vegan protein. It’s tasty and GMO free. I find it easy to digest and keep it in regular rotation even while off my cleanse.

There are certainly other methods for getting that necessary dose of protein after a good workout, but this is my favorite way. Simple, easy, and perfect for on the go days.

Have you started using protein shakes after workouts? What flavors do you like? Let me know what else is out there to try!

Happy working out, ladies!

Make Up Monday: Perfume Collection & Advice

DSC_0046

I have a carefully curated perfume collection that I just love. Scents can boost your mood, and choosing a fragrance for the day can have a hand in your confidence, your style, and the way you feel. I am not married to any one scent, and cycle through a few favorites. I feel that certain scents are better for certain people, and it’s important to know how your body chemistry reacts to perfumes.

I have three favorites that I reach for the most, for good reason.

DSC_0055

Creed Spring Flower:

DSC_0059

First, look at how beautiful this bottle is! Creed is a classic brand, albeit an expensive way to go with perfume, that makes me feel sophisticated and feminine. Spring Flowers is a rich, elegant scent. It isn’t a girly perfume, despite the hot pink bottle, and I would recommend this to women aged 35 and older.

J’Adore Dior:

DSC_0063

This is a best seller for a reason! This is a great gift if you don’t know what to get your sister or best friend for the holidays, because the bottle is a real stunner in person. J’Adore is a beautiful scent, and it looks great on your dresser. It’s feminine and ageless, and it doesn’t go flowery on me like many scents tend to with my body chemistry. I feel so pretty when I put J’Adore on- maybe it goes back to those commercials with Charlize Theron dripping in jewels!

Jo Malone Blue Agave & Cacao Cologne:

DSC_0060

I am such a sucker for good marketing, and I love everything Jo Malone does. The bottles are beautiful, and this is a great brand to support. The scents are rich and long lasting, made with great ingredients. You can also blend and combine different Jo Malone scents for a personal fragrance that works on you. My friend is blending the Grapefruit and Lime Basil one lately, as scents go sweet on her, and these colognes react differently with everyone. This is a definite recommendation from me- pick whatever Jo Malone appeals to you, and find your own signature!

DSC_0071

As you can see, a lot of my bottles are pretty empty! Time to find some all new favorites. When I head out to sample all of the bottles on display at Nordstrom’s this month, I will always keep in mind that classic scents work on me, perfumes with heavy floral notes are too much for me, and a few cheaper bottles are better for my frequent travel lifestyle.

What is your go-to scent? Share with me! Any recommendations?

Have a great day,

Rose

WEEKLY FAVORITE: Watches

Watches are underrated, in my opinion.

They’re absolutely essential to any woman’s wardrobe, and yet we hardly talk about them! Mens’ watches are ubiquitous, with known brands and distinct styles. But women have to pick out watches based on taste, and sometimes it’s hard to know which are appropriate for a night out, or a business meeting, or a weekend shopping.

So here are my top three, each with their own unique purpose!

The dressy watch:

DSC_0318

Perfect for a glam night out, this wraparound watch that I bought in Italy is one of my go-to pieces when I want to feel dressed up.

The business watch:

DSC_0313

This Michael Kors watch is a great choice for a day at the office. It projects style and confidence.

The every day watch:

DSC_0332

My classic Anne Klein watch has several skinny chains that make up the strap, and this watch looks way fancier than what I paid for it. It looks great peeking out from under a long sleeve tee, or a casual button down.

Nordstroms, Nordstrom’s Rack, and Neiman Marcus are great places to buy watches. Nordstrom’s Rack has great watch deals for women, especially around the holidays!

Do you have a favorite watch? I want to know!

Working Out: The Power of Walking

I tend to be an all or nothing girl.

If I’m going to work out, I would rather run stairs than take a leisurely yoga class. You’ll find me going hard with my trainer for an hour instead of taking an extra hour to watch TV. A lot of the time, this is a great thing.

Yet recently, my life has been settling down. Things are calmer, and a more relaxed view of working out only makes sense. So I have started walking.

DSC_0191

Luckily I have my girl Mandy to motivate me to get out there and walk everyday, and I’ve really learned to love it.

DSC_0177

Getting out and walking everyday is so good for me. It’s good cardio (albeit less rigorous than sprinting steps), good for the heart, and good for my soul. It gives me a chance to catch my breath and meditate.

And it’s good for Mandy, too!

What do you do to relax? Do you enjoy a nice walk?
