HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE: Moms, Sisters, & Girlfriends

This week is the first annual THIS DAY RIGHT NOW Holiday Gift Guide!

And with Christmas just a little over a week away, it’s present buying time. It’s okay if you procrastinate until Christmas Eve. Just give something nice, fun, and useful, and no one will ever have to know!

First up are the women in our lives!

Here are my ideas for great gifts for our moms, sisters, and girlfriends.

Room Spray: This smells great, and we love that! It’s a little more expensive that your sister is likely to spend on herself, but it’s also useful, beautiful, and looks Christmassy. A nice bottle of room spray is a great gift.

Costume Jewelry: This nice pearl necklace (in a cute sheer white bag) is pretty and special. My advice to women shopping for other women- if you like it, usually the other women in your life will like it! I want this necklace myself, so I know whoever I give it to will be pleased!

Special perfume: Creed is the definition of elegant, and this classic white bottle would look great on any woman’s vanity. This LOVE IN WHITE scent was made especially for one of the First Ladies, and it is a timeless, luxurious gift.

Journals: Aren’t these just the best gift? You’re giving someone blank pages, full of promise.

Earrings: Light, pretty earrings are a timeless gift that you can’t go wrong with. Be sure to pick a light pair that match everything, like these plain silver ones.

Luggage Tag: This is such a pretty gift, and luggage tags are something you can never have enough of. They help you recognize your bag, encourage you to travel more, and the leather strap is durable.

Soaps: Any soap is a great gift to me! You can never have too many. Pick one that looks gorgeous in its wrap, and smells great. It’s personal, and girly.

Happy shopping! Get the ladies in your life something great.

Be sure to add THIS DAY RIGHT NOW to your bookmarks, because we are coming back each day this week with another hard-to-buy-for group. Tomorrow find out what to buy the men in your life!

Make Up Monday: DIOR MASCARA

DSC_0130

These three babies are a big part of my daily make up routine & look.

First, there is the Dior Maximizer lash plumping serum, which I use as a primer. This conditions my lashes, and acts as a great base. Everything goes on smoother after applying this white serum, and it really opens your eyes up.

Then I use the Overcurl. I don’t even need an eyelash curler with this mascara! This is the best 1-2 combination that I’ve found, and people ask me what mascara I use whenever I do this. (I also use Latisse, but that is a story for another post).

The DiorShow is another favorite. It has just the best wand, since it separates each lash.

I do a straight application from the roots, no wiggling. Just three coats, plus two on the bottom. I wait about a minute between each coat and then go again.

These are great for special occasions, because of the wow factor, but I also use Dior mascara daily. I like the big wand, although the downsize is that they dry out quicker and have to be replaced more often.

Dior Mascara all the way! Diorshow is a bestseller for good reason. If you want long, long, long lashes, this is for you.

What’s your favorite mascara? Is there one you swear by?

Let me know!!

Make Up Monday: Bobbi Brown Favorites!

DSC_0112

Ah, Bobbi Brown.

I am a huge Bobbi Brown fan, as you have probably figured out if you’ve spent any time on This Day Right Now!

I wanted to share my top five favorite Bobbi Brown items with you.

1. Concealer with Powder

This is still the best product out there for dark circles. This famous correcting concealer can cover anything, and what else can you ask for from a concealer?! It doesn’t crease, and it is gentle on my skin.

2. Long Wear Cream Shadow

Oh, a cream shadow! Love this stuff. It is a great base for other shadows, or to wear by itself.

3. Pot Rouge for Lips & Cheeks

I love the texture of this product. It’s creamy and stays on for hours. It’s my perfect PURSE PRODUCT, since it perks me up and is amazing for the on-the-run life. It’s a little splash of color and a definite recommendation if you’re new to Bobbi Brown.

4. Shimmer Brick

Great summer or spring colors, really. This blush is very forgiving when applied with a brush, and is a nice pick me up. It’s easy to use and it always makes me happy to open this up, since it’s so beautiful.

5. Face & Body Bronzing Duo

I use this every  day. The bronzer is light for a bronzer, and the blush is warm, so it’s great for all over your face.

I am a devotee to Bobbi Brown brushes, and lipsticks, but these five are my make up bag essentials.

What products are you most loyal to?

Make Up Monday: TAN TOWELS!

Nothing is more forgiving than a tan.  We all know that.

So… being the vain and strategic woman I am, I have dedicated many hours to finding…

the perfect self tanner.

Here’s my criteria for self tanners: (1) they cannot smell, (2) they must give a natural looking color, (3) there must be an even application method, (4) and the drying time must be reasonable.

Tan Towels have been the consistent winner.  I even tried their lotion, and I think the towels are the best shot for a good even application.

Here are my tips:

Exfoliate.  One of my favorite methods is to use Epsom scrubbing salts mixed with lotion.  Rub all over and then sit in the tub for 20 minutes.  If you don’t have time to sit in the tub…rub and rinse in the shower.  (*And if you don’t have time to exfoliate, tan towels will still look good.  But give yourself a treat sometime this week and hang out in that bathtub for a bit!)

Do your feet last — careful on the sides and around your ankle bone.  As soon as you are done with the application to your feet, apply a little bit of moisturizer from your ankles on down so it looks more natural.

Scrub your hands and nails with a scrubbing brush as soon as you have finished applying.

Let it dry for about 10 minutes before getting dressed.  This will allow you to keep from ruining your clothes.  And even a bit winds up on your clothes, it’s incredibly easy to wash – no need to use anything special to get it out of your clothes.

This is one of the few products that I am 100% in love with, and if I find a box, I will grab it. I buy mine at Nordstrom’s.

What are your tanning tricks?

Dior Airflash: My Latest Favorite Foundation

I am a recent Dior Airflash convert.

I had been hearing rumblings …. Then while on a trip this summer, I met a lovely woman, Sue from Dallas whose soft look belied her 60 years.  She had just gotten off the phone with her beautiful 26 year old daughter who had run out of Airflash and was desperately seeking her mother’s help to get some more!  I was sold.

So…I headed to the Dior counter at my neighborhood Nordstrom’s and asked if I could give Airflash a try.  By the way, never be shy about sidling up to the make-up counter.  The staffs there are more than happy to help and show off all their good product.  Generally, I find this to be a low pressure sales situation and a great way to test out what is new and might be helpful and fun to start using.

Irene at the Nordstrom’s counter in Austin suggested applying Airflash lightly using a kabuki brush, and showed me how best to do this.

First spray on the side of your hand.

Then dab the kabuki brush and begin spreading evenly over your face.

DSC_0186

For a bit of a heavier application, you can spray Airflash directly onto your face… in a “Z” motion.  Then spread with your hands or a brush if you prefer.

Airflash gives a really smooth look.  I find that it brightens my skin.  And it passes my critical ‘not heavy looking’ test.  NOTE! Be sure to use a face cream with a good SPF before applying Airflash since it doesn’t have its own SPF.  For me, it’s been a small price to pay for the look it gives!
