WEEKLY FAVORITE: Big Sunglasses

You’ve got to love big, glamorous shades.

I never get tired of the style, no matter how life goes. Big sunglasses are glamorous and elegant no matter what the situation. Think Jackie O.

These Versace shades are my oldest pair, and they stopped making them! But there are still tons of pairs like this on the market.

DSC_0061

These are big, but still sized to a narrow face, which I have. When picking out sunglasses, it is very important to keep the proportions of your face in mind…

Some of my other sunglass tips are:

Large black or brown frames are ideal.

Make sure they go with your hair color.

Try and buy light & polarized lenses.

Keep them in their clamshell so they stay nice.

Now I want a hot pair of Chanel sunglasses. I can’t help my love of glamorous shades!

What’s your favorite sunglass brand? What shape do you tend to go for?

MAKE UP MONDAY: Lavender Perfume

I have a perfume that I love, that is very inexpensive & very light.

DSC_0172

It’s a Thymes Cologne. I stack this spray with a body wash and body cream in the same scent.

This is great for travel since I don’t want to ruin nice expensive perfumes- in fact, last year a bottle of Creed broke inside my suitcase. I’ve barely recovered! So carrying cheaper perfume is definitely the way to fly.

This lavender perfume is clean & fresh, and I use it for a room spray, too.

What are your favorite perfumes to travel with?

Do you love unique scents like lavender, too?

DAILY LIFE: What I Eat- Snacks

DSC_0067

I have changed my eating habits in the last year, and I’ve found it has really helped me. I have lost weight, and I look very different overall (or so EVERYONE says!), from my eyes being brighter to my skin being healthier. Of course, there have been some other changes too, but what you eat makes a huge difference in the rest of your life.

Now, these are my snack staples.

YOGURT: I cut out dairy, since it seemed to be affecting my inflammation and sinuses. I was a major Chobani addict, so finding a yogurt that could replace it was trying at first. I love the texture of this coconut milk yogurt. The creaminess is actually more satisfying than the flavor, since the flavors of these are just okay. Still my favorite yogurt overall, now.

COFFEE: I also had to lose my Half and Half for my coffee, and have found the hazelnut flavor of the coconut milk creamer to be a great fix. On days I want it a little sweeter, I put a pack of Truvia in my coffee along with the creamer, but most of the time a splash of this is just perfect.

HUMMUS: The Mediterranean Hummus is the best! I found this at Trader Joe’s the other day– or rather, the boy in Trader Joe’s who was helping me find my pita chips would NOT let me leave until he got me a container of this creamy, dreamy hummus from the back room. I dip celery in it when I get hungry at work. Love it!

VEGGIES: I’m not a good cook, so having avocados of various ripeness in the house help me to eat my veggies without having to do much work. Sliced avocado in a salad, or on wheat toast, just makes everything better. It’s a guilt free addition to anything. PS- if you’re worrying about the fat content of an avocado, you should think twice. It’s a vegetable! And one of the best for you.

GRANOLA BARS: like the Pro Bar in the picture, are helpful on days when I need all my food to be portable, easy, and filling. Pro Bars are perfect because they are high calorie, healthy, and can substitute a lunch if I don’t have time to eat a whole meal. I recently discovered them at Whole Foods. I also love the Thunderbird Energetica bars that we have sold on every corner here in Austin.

LENTIL CHIPS: I have a bag of salt and pepper lentil chips from Trader Joe’s in my house at all times. They are salty enough that I only need to eat about ten, and they are filling. Make sure they are made with mostly lentils, or brown rice flour, or whole wheat flour.

FRUIT: I am a fruit addict. I eat apples, bananas, grapes, nectarines, on and on. I love it. My friend taught me a great trick for apples that I’ve been using a lot lately, since I prefer my apples cut up rather than biting into them.  First, cut a Fiji apple up the night before and put it in a container. I know what you’re thinking- but Rose, won’t it turn brown? Isn’t it gross to eat brown apples the next day? Well, yes. But then you cut a Meyer lemon in half and squeeze it all over the apple slices. Meyer lemons are sweeter than regular lemons, and their acidity works the same way as regular lemons to prevent browning. If the lemon is still too sour for you, just throw some unsweetened coconut shavings in!

DSC_0070

I also eat three meals a day, made a specific way by my chef, which we can talk about in another post. If you’re an on the go business person like me, I would love to hear what you eat in the car between meetings! I know it can be hard sometimes, which is why staying organized and planning ahead are so important. I know my mom readers out there know this better than anyone.

So, tell me your favorites!

Happy snacking,

Rose

MAKE UP MONDAY: Armani Foundation

I tried this foundation on at the Armani counter in Neiman Marcus, and immediately knew it was a winner for women my age.

DSC_0147

The PERKS of Armani Designer Lift:

-It’s firming

-Goes on smoothly

-Very supportive

-Feels good on the face

-Has sunscreen

-Glides on

It is not as light as my Dior Airflash foundation, but it mixes so well with my beloved Armani fluid sheers. I take a few drops of my pink Fluid Sheer and apply it right over my foundation with the same brush, on my cheeks or in other places I think could use some light. Adding a hint of color to your foundation is great for aging.

You can’t screw this up, since the coverage is buildable. I highly recommend it!

Have a great week,

-Rose

FAVORITE THINGS: Coffee, Coffee, Coffee!

There is a new Trader Joe’s in my town!

And I couldn’t be happier about it. Especially in regards to COFFEE!

DSC_0084

Trader Joe’s has great coffee at the best prices I’ve ever seen.

I love my coffee strong and French pressed, and recently I discovered the perfect blend of dark roasts at my TJ’s.

DSC_0087

My younger sister actually introduced me to this coffee when I was in LA, and she always brought me a can as a gift when she visited. I am so happy that I can get it now!

If you have a Trader Joe’s near you, I highly recommend checking it out and picking up some Bay Blend for yourself. There is nothing better than a hot cup of coffee in the morning.

What’s your favorite type of coffee? Light and sweet? Or dark and strong?

MAKE UP MONDAY: Red Lipstick!

As a general rule, I do not wear red lipstick.DSC_0139

I would never have picked this color out myself, and this is why I am always preaching for women to go visit their local make up counters! I was at the Armani counter in Neiman Marcus at the Domain in Austin, and my fab friend and neighbor Lindy was helping me out.

She put this red lipstick on me, and right away we could tell it was perfect!
DSC_0137 DSC_0135

The reason this red works so well is that it is a sheer formula. I know a lot of younger ladies want super vibrant matte shades, but for me and others not 21 anymore, a sheer lipstick is a beautiful thing. I wore this on New Year’s with a little frosty off-white gloss, and it came out very festive.

This red Armani lipstick goes really well with my pink clothing, or anything brick colored (my favorite shade for these cold months). This is the sort of lip product that you can bring anywhere, wear anytime- and it was the ONLY lipstick I packed with me on my last trip! It’s that versatile and wearable.

I love the sheerness, and the lightness. It was a surprising find.

So! My two words of advice-

Get yourself to a make up counter and try, try try!

And invest in the good stuff. Even totally lipstick adverse women should check out how a sheer pop of color like this can transform your whole face.

Have a great week!

BEST TRAVEL TIPS

Over the years, I have perfected the art of traveling.

I get on a plane often, so I really know what I’m doing when it comes to packing, getting through security, and not killing yourself on the plane.

1450041_2670757891690_398669802_n

TIP 1: BAGGIES FOR SECURITY

The night before I travel, I prepackage all of my make up into plastic baggies. Then I put them in an easy access spot in my black plane bag. I have a lot of products, so I HAVE to plan ahead. We all know that TSA wants you to put your stuff in ziplocs, and sometimes you can get through without this step, but this is a definite “better safe than sorry” in my book. You can pre-baggie everything at home and zip through, or you can chance it and possibly spend 25 minutes with TSA agent Joseph going through your purse!

TIP 2: ROLLING DUFFEL BAG

If you’re checking your bag, make it a rolling duffel in a water resistant fabric. If they leave it on the tarmac, you’re f*cked- trust me, I know from personal experience! This is an easy bag to fill and drag through an airport, and isn’t unwieldy.

TIP 3: TISSUE PAPER

I pack everything in tissue paper. This is my little secret. I wrap suits, dresses, and everything else in tissue paper that I save during the year. This prevents stuff from wrinkling, to some degree, and is a good form of protection from the stress of traveling.

TIP 4: STEAM YOUR STUFF

Use the hot shower in your hotel room to get any wrinkles out of your clothes IMMEDIATELY upon arriving. Really, the sooner the better. Then hang them up in your closet. Hang the clothes over the shower rod, on the outside, with the shower head pointing straight down so there’s no splashing.

TIP 5: LIFT TEST OR CHECK

This is probably my biggest trick. If you can’t lift your bag over your head, check it!! You would be amazed at how many people, especially women, don’t check this before they leave the house. Then they get on the plane and someone else has to help them lift it into the overhead bin and take it back out. This is such a time killer! At home, just keep taking stuff out until you CAN lift it, if you don’t want to check it.

What are your best travel tips?

I would love to know!

Happy travels.

MAKE UP MONDAY: My Best Beauty Tips!

Hello! First Make Up Monday of the New Year, so it only makes sense that I give out my best beauty tips. They are a little untraditional, since my way of feeling beautiful is not just about products. Let’s dive in!

DSC_0087

TIP 1: GET A FACIAL EACH MONTH AS SOON AS YOU CAN AFFORD IT.

This includes waxing and extractions to keep your face really clean. Facials have a cumulative result that work like a mini face lift over time.

TIP 2: WORK OUT

This makes a huge difference in the clarity of your eyes, and your skin. Working out helps you with looking more traditionally beautiful, as well as just body toning. I know you might be expecting a traditional tip like curl your eyelashes, but I don’t think any of those tips matter if you aren’t also doing this one.

TIP 3: EAT WELL

Your eyelashes grow, your hair is healthy, your nails are long. What better beauty trick is there than effortless beauty?

TIP 4: BUY PRODUCTS AT THE TOP OF YOUR PRICE RANGE EACH TIME.

Buy the best cleansers, moisturizers, eyeshadows, make up brushes, and all the rest whenever it’s time for a new one. Instead of three mid-prized lipsticks that cost the same as one amazing one, buy the better one that you’ll have for longer. With higher end products, there’s less worry. Lipsticks don’t flake or cling to any dryness in your lips, foundations protect better; there’s better camouflaging, hydration, and use value.

TIP 5: FRESHEN YOUR LOOK OFTEN.

Don’t get stale! I would recommend getting a haircut by someone new who has a good reputation (like I just did! And man, what a brand new haircut by someone with a fresh eye can do!). Really try new make up, since the same stuff doesn’t work as skin changes. Wear different things on different days, and get new highlights. Go to beauty counters and ask them to put new products on you! Feeling new in your own skin can help you feel extra beautiful.

What are your best beauty tips? Have you ever had a facial?

SPIRITUAL FRIDAY: Change… & The Kitchen Stool

I’ve been thinking about change, of course– most of us are– as this New Year begins.

Who can resist the fresh start, the clean slate?

So appealing….

Yet, I’ve also been thinking about the changes  that I don’t welcome.  For me those changes come mostly with age. And yes, I can complain about the wrinkles and having to color my hair more often but those aren’t the changes that I’m really talking about.

I’m talking about the things that always were, that are now starting to fade away.

Like the kitchen stool in Trish’s kitchen.

I have spent countless hours on that stool, watching my best friend’s mom Trish cook, talking things over– sometimes alone, sometimes with the other women collected in that kitchen for the same comfort I sought.

And Trish delivered that comfort, my whole life.  She was always a source of wisdom and perspective. She’s 81 now and lives on her own.  She lost both her husband and daughter to cancer. And I visit her in her rambling house in Vermont whenever I can. I say it’s to help her. Really, though, it’s to help me.

During my last visit, Trish wound up in the emergency room.  She found herself suddenly unable to walk.  Now she faces a slow recovery and uses a walker.  It is harder for her to stand in the kitchen.

So our kitchen stool days have changed.  I wonder, are they gone?

It has occurred to me that perhaps it’s my turn to set up a kitchen stool.

I think it may be my time to be what Trish was to me, to others…. After all, I was taught by the best.

What rituals have comforted you?  What people taught you well?  Share Please.

Have a great weekend,

WEEKLY FAVORITE: TV Guilty Pleasures

I am a recent Netflix addict.

I installed Netflix onto my ipad mini, and little did I know it would take over my life.

So, since I spend far too much time marathoning shows lately, I figured this TV-centric post was in order!

Here are my top five favorite TV shows right now.

5. DA VINCI’S DEMONS

Da Vinci's Demons 2013

This is set in Florence, and I got hooked on it on the tails of my trip to Italy. It has a great cast, and the plot is great. It’s all about old world Italy- the Medici’s in power, Da Vinci the genius, and the mystery of Florence’s brilliant population for centuries. There is a lot of gratuitous sex- to the point where I want more plot and less sex! But overall, this is a show I love to sink my teeth into.

4. NASHVILLE

Nashville-3

I know. It’s just ridiculous. It is pure eye candy, entertaining, soap opera awesome. Why I love it? Sit down with your bowl of ice cream (either some almond milk low-fat vanilla for a good day, or Ben & Jerry’s Americone dream when you’re going all out) and turn on Nashville and enjoy your Wednesday night. I even know some of the songs at this point!

3. SCANDAL

17SCANDAL-articleLarge

Intense. Crazy story, but somehow hangs together. Good job Shondra Rhimes, the writer, for always keeping it going. I always wonder, Could this really happen? It’s about a secret, intriguing world that has me fascinated. And hey, my mom watches it, too!

2. THE GOOD WIFE

22755

It’s topical, and they really make use of what is going on. I’ve been watching for years now, and I absolutely love Julianna Margulies. Although I hate Christopher Noth as Peter- even though I adored him as Mr. Big! Man, he is not an easy man to like. If you’re a woman who’s ever been married, especially to a man like that, you really understand The Good Wife’s point of view. It’s funny and poignant, and a total must-watch!

…AND MY NUMBER ONE:

1. HOMELAND

Homeland-image-homeland-36188890-1920-1080

I watch this on Showtime that night, or ASAP so there are no spoilers for me out in the real world. There is moral ambiguity, politics, mystery, and GREAT acting. I love the cast, love the writing, and it keeps me both entertained and in suspense. It’s just so flippin good. Nobody is all good or all bad, and I love that complexity.

What are your favorite shows? Do share!

I loved House of Cards, too- don’t ask how quickly I watched the first season!

Happy watching.
